BRIGHTENING FUTURES THROUGH EDUCATION

EDUCATE THE CHILDREN (ETC): MALAWI

After primary school, students in Malawi pay for secondary education. Many families cannot afford school fees and need financial support, which results in approximately 68 percent of students dropping out of school. The Educate the Children’s (ETC) scholarship fund, which is fully funded by the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation, provides educational opportunities for these children. In 2017, the Fund provided tuition, uniforms and books to more than 190 students. From those students supported last year, 41 students graduated from secondary school and 16 graduated from college. Since ETC’s inception in 2007, contributions have helped more than 860 students, and more than 120 of those students have gone on to earn college degrees in a variety of professional fields.

SEACOLOGY

The Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation partners with Seacology to improve the lives of children and their families in island communities, and at the same time, help protect fragile island environments. Through this partnership local islanders are given a unique opportunity: if the village agrees to create or support a forest or marine reserve, the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation and Seacology help build schools, community centers, water systems, health clinics or provide training to help them lead more sustainable livelihoods. Over the course of more than 20 years, 1.34 million acres of marine and terrestrial habitat have been protected, and island communities have received support to better their communities. These projects span the globe, with more than 270 projects in 58 countries around the world.

ETC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT MAKES HER MOTHER PROUD

(MALAWI) Ruth Mapemba lost her father when she was in primary school. Her mother raised Ruth by herself, and with the few resources she could obtain, managed to keep Ruth in school until 2015. The Educate the Children (ETC) program then stepped in to help fund Ruth’s education at Bzyanzi Seconday School, where Ruth is currently in Form 4 and completing her final year of high school. Ruth and her mother are grateful to the ETC program for helping her complete her education; otherwise, Ruth may have continued the cycle of generational poverty. Ruth’s mother is so proud of her daughter, and she hopes that when she finishes school, Ruth will be the one to take care of her in her old age. Both she and Ruth are grateful to the sponsors of the ETC program for bringing them hope.
