HOW TO PREVENT MASKNE

Maskne is a new form of acne that is being talked about over the internet and we are here to tell you what is causing it and what you can do to prevent it from occurring.

Maskne involves breakouts on the lower half of your face caused by the prolonged use of a facial protective mask. Maskne has always existed as a condition but has been a more common issue for those individuals in professions where you have to wear a mask regularly. Now that the general public is being encouraged to wear a mask, the incident of maskne has become more prevalent and something more widely spoken about.

Acne occurs when the pores on your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin cells, makeup, dirt or bacteria. When you wear a face mask for a long period of time, the increased humidity, friction, sweating, breathing and talking affects your sebum production, creating the perfect breeding ground for inflamed skin and breakouts. While you can’t stop wearing a mask there are steps that you can take to look after your skin and prevent breakouts.

Check out our top tips below.

1. Wash and cleanse your face:  It’s important to ensure that you wash your face twice daily, every morning and night to cleanse away the dirt, oil, makeup, pollutants and toxins that cause breakouts. If you are regularly cleaning your skin it will be brighter, softer and smoother. (ageLOC® LumiSpa®)

2. Moisturise:  You should be applying a moisturiser every day after you cleanse to keep your skin hydrated, to prevent water loss and to act as a barrier between the mask and your skin. (Moisturisers)

3. Don’t wear heavy makeup: If you’re suffering from maskne you may be tempted to cover it up with make-up, however heavy products like bronzer and concealers can clog pores and make acne harder to treat. It is best to keep your skin as bare as possible when wearing a face mask. If you want a lightweight coverage, we recommend using a tinted moisturiser. (Advanced tinted moisturiser with sunscreen)

4. Wash your mask: It is important that the mask you are wearing is clean. Disposable masks are only intended to be used once, for a couple of hours. Once a disposable mask has been used it should be discarded. If you are using a cloth mask, it should be washed after every use to ensure you’re not trapping existing dirt or oils onto your skin.

Always remember to be kind to yourself and treat breakouts with some much-needed TLC. If you’re suffering from maskne make sure you wash and cleanse your face daily, moisturise, don’t wear heavy makeup and wash your mask. For long term acne prevention make sure you are following a strict skin care routine to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
