Taking care of your skin microbiomes

What is a microbiome?
A microbiome is a community of micro-organisms living together in a particular habitat. They are on nearly every surface of the earth, including humans, animals, plants, buildings etc. [1]

Are microbiomes dangerous?
Microbiomes are made up of trillions of good and bad microbes that live on its surface, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Surprisingly you need both types to remain healthy, so the goal is to create a healthy balance. By having a healthy balance, the good bacteria can flourish without letting the residue bad bacteria overtake it. In fact, most of the bad microbes don’t harm you at all and are important as they help digest food, protect against infection and help your skin look and feel better.

How do you maintain a healthy microbiome?

Many people ask the question, how do I maintain a healthy microbiome? Your microbiome is as inherent to you as your DNA and genetic code. So what matters is making sure that the crucial eco-system remains undisturbed. Instead of being grossed out by the trillions of microbes that live, embrace them and do your best to protect them as well as they protect you.

Microbiomes and your skin?
A microbiome is unique to each individual person, right down to where they live, what they eat, or even whether or not they’re a pet person. There are different microbiomes on different parts of the body. What lives in your mouth is different from what lives on the soles of your feet or surface of your face.

The skin microbiome is a community of billions of friendly living microorganisms. Think of it as an invisible, hard-working eco-system that lives on the skin to help keep it healthy and in good condition[1]. The microbiome naturally protects your skin from unfriendly organisms and helps manage your skin’s pH. It also produces skin nutrients and essential skin lipids. Understanding the microbiome is essential if you want better health and skin, as any imbalances can manifest in skin conditions such as eczema, allergies, dandruff and acne. It is important to remember that your gut and skin are intimately linked and in constant conversation with one another. In fact, your skin is a great indicator for what is going on inside your body. If you are suffering from skin issues it is likely because of an imbalance in your gut.

For a happy skin microbiome use ageLOC® LumiSpa®

Cleansing your face with a hard scrub may feel like the best way to clean away the sweat, makeup and environmental pollutants that cling to your skin, however, to keep your microbiome healthy it is important that you cleanse your face with delicate products. Being gentle to the microbiome starts with being gentle to the skin. That means using products that respect the skin’s pH and its microbiome while you wash. Harsh cleansers destroy our bad bacteria and also strip away our good bacteria too.

For a happy microbiome we recommend using the ageLOC® LumiSpa® and LumiSpa® Treatment Cleansers. Not only is the ageLOC® LumiSpa® the world’s #1 At Home Beauty Device System Brand[1] and the 2020 NewBeauty Best Cleansing Device Winner[2] but it has also been proven to be microbiome friendly. The LumiSpa® system respects skin’s pH, helps preserve a natural barrier, and helps maintain and balance skin’s microbiome for all ages and skin types.
